It seems strange to us today that physicians used to use all their senses, including smell and taste, when examining a patient, and their language was viscerally evocative. Now doctors use their sense of smell only occasionally, and taste never. Machines seem to be making examination skills obsolete, and computer printouts reducing colourful language to numbers with labels.
