CHRISTMAS DAY.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Welcome, thrice welcome Christmas day<\/em> !
\nLet’s eat, drink, dance, and sing away:
\n Old England<\/em> ne’er had stronger reason
\nTo welcome in this joyful season !
\nMark high<\/em> and low<\/em>, and all around us
\nAnd know the blessings<\/em> that surround us.
\nLet ‘em in all their pomp appear;
\nSure omens of a happy year<\/em> !
\nFirst, turn your eyes upon the great<\/em> ;
\nWhen did such virtues<\/em> rule the state ?
\nThe country<\/em> has their whole attention,
\nWithout a thought of place or pension.
\nOf parts, and pow’r, no prostitution,
\nOf liberty, no diminution ;
\nSound as a roach our constitution
\nWhich florid grown, by over feeding,
\nIs now quite cool with frequent bleeding :
\nGreat Lawyers<\/em>, with our good at heart,
\nNow every day new doctrines start.
\nFor freedom<\/em> and for Magna Chart,
\nOur clergy<\/em> too, all int’rest scorning,
\nAre teaching, preaching, night and morning ;
\nT o keep their flocks secure at home,
\nAnd guard them from the wolves of Rome<\/em>:
\nSo by their zeal, which never ceases.
\nThe growth of popery decreases.
\n Physicians<\/em> now cure each disease,
\nThey take great pains, and little fees.
\nNothing but learning, parts, and knowledge,
\nCan give a passport to the college :
\nNo poison’s sold for nerves or vapours,
\nNo quacking nostrums fill the papers—
\nThese are the gifts the great have sent ye,
\nFor all is concord, peace, and plenty.
\nThe poor, as fat as brawn, we meet ,
\nEating minc’d pyes along the street
\nNo Harlots to be seen, not one,
\nNot ev’n the Whore of Babylon<\/em> !
\nThese times are sung by great and small
\n‘Tis merry Christmas for us all;
\nAnd certain ’tis, by what is past,
